How likeness stays consistent across a personalised story

Understand identity continuity in a personalised illustrated book: what a source photograph controls, what stays authored and what to inspect in representative proof.

The short answer

Consistency means the illustrated person remains recognisable as the same identity while the story changes their action, expression, costume, camera angle and setting. The source photograph informs stable physical traits; the authored scene controls the performance and world around them.

Recognisable is different from identical

An illustrated character will not look like the same passport photograph repeated on every page. Camera angle, lighting, distance and expression naturally vary as the story moves. The goal is that the reader still recognises one coherent person through those changes.

Identity continuity comes from relationships between features—face shape, eyes, brows, nose, mouth, jaw, cheeks, skin tone, hairline and hair texture—along with age, build and distinguishing traits. It should not depend on pasting photographic skin, eyes or teeth into painted artwork.

The scene should be allowed to direct the character

Each authored surface has a particular action, gaze, expression intent, costume, composition and light. Preserving those choices is what makes the person belong inside the story rather than float above it.

This is why the source image does not control pose or clothing. A person can remain recognisable while looking up at a lantern in one scene and reading quietly in another. Consistency is identity continuity, not visual repetition.

The scene should be allowed to direct the character: checklist

  1. Source reference: physical identity, age, build and distinguishing traits.

  2. Authored scene: pose, gaze, expression intent, action and costume.

  3. Illustrated world: composition, environment, lighting, objects and story contact.

Consistency becomes stricter with more than one person

A multi-person story must preserve each identity separately and keep every person attached to the correct role. Features should not drift from one person to another, and relative age or height should follow the edition’s declared relationship rules.

That is one reason the workflow asks for a separate primary photograph for each role. Stable cast-slot mapping is part of the production contract, not a cosmetic form detail.

What useful personalisation proof should show

A single close-up can hide continuity problems. Better proof uses the same clearly labelled example person across at least two meaningfully different scenes—different action, distance or expression—while keeping the identity legible.

The source photograph should remain visibly photographic and the outputs visibly illustrated. Labels should explain whether an image is a source example, representative template art or a personalised demonstration. Blurring those categories makes the proof less trustworthy.

Continuity requires review, not just generation

A robust workflow compares pages as a sequence. Reviewers look for identity drift, swapped roles, changes in age or build, accidental realism, anatomy problems and scene damage. A page can be attractive on its own and still fail the book if it no longer belongs to the same cast or visual world.
